| And when I got back, the city and my street and my house and everything were right here where I'd left them. This sounds like an obvious statement, laughable even, until the alternative has happened to you. I am glad to know I can travel. This trip was very much a baby step but still scary, and I'm not planning to go jetting off on a regular basis, but at least I know it's possible.
Ah, but I do love Chicago. Apart from the food, which I believe to be as good as anywhere in the country, I never seem to hear anyone talk about what a beautiful, welcoming, walkable, generally user-friendly city it is. Obviously that changes some in the winters, which I have not yet dared since Neil says I would need special clothing to avoid death or at least severe frostbite.
I want to extend a special thank-you to Elyse Marshall, Neil's publicist at Harper Collins, who took the incredibly generous step of arranging to stay with Chicagoland friends so I could have her room for the night. She looked very much like most of the publicists I've had over the past several years -- young, female, and gorgeous -- but, unlike the majority of them, I know she must be better than competent or Neil wouldn't have her. In addition to the hotel room, Elyse, you have given me a shot of new hope for the publishing industry. | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |
| We have finally settled on names for them. Grey is Misha (10 weeks) and black is Kabanos (14 weeks).
Misha is a weird cat. He seems insecure with the earth's gravitational pull and won't ever jump. At least two paws must be planted on terra firma at all times. He watches solemnly as Kabanos hops to exciting new high perches, gets up on his tippy-toes but promptly gives up, knowing that he can't fly. Is that normal at 10 weeks? Are some cats non-jumpers? I wanted to try toilet training these cats, but this means i'll need a staircase for Misha.
Kabanos is a big fan of LICKING. He's very skittish though, he'll poof up against the most random of foes; tv-remote, cell phone, an unmoving hand, an old sock laying on the floor. Enemies are everywhere, he must be wary. Both are big on cord chewing, clearly there's really no greater pleasure in the cat-life. And gosh, these cats are growing like mushrooms, Kabanos has already lost "kitten face" :( In any case, behold! kitties:

| Introducing Molly, my little brother's cat. She's about two years old.
( Molly Dolly )
She's definitely the most playful of all three cats. Not surprising since she is very young compared to the other two. She always enjoys wrestling with Lily, the second oldest. And sometimes gets put in her place by Apollo, the oldest. She is very lean and always is chasing something, mostly bugs. My mama is the one that calls her Molly Dolly. | comments: 8 comments or Leave a comment |
| I always considered Kongs to be more of a dog toy. Last time I went to Petsmart with my mother, she bought one for my cats... I didn't think they'd be interested in it, but they really love them!
I've actually had to buy another one since because they fight over it.
Rubbin and Lovin on her Kong Wubba Hugga.

| HOME. I have now traveled outside Louisiana/Mississippi and returned successfully with no deaths and only two panic attacks. On the second leg of my return flight, despite my having requested all aisle seats, I got a middle seat next to a young man with extreme B.O. I could just about take it when he was still, but I almost passed out any time he moved an arm. Luckily he slept through most of the flight. I'd nearly forgotten all the reasons I so love to fly.
It was a fun trip, though, even if it had its moments of trauma, and it was a good baby step for me. Thanks so much to Neil, The Fabulous Lorraine, and publicist Elyse Marshall for making it happen. | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
| Hello,
I have recently come into a debate with someone in my local community about declawing. Said person refuses to believe that declawing is unethical, inhumane and extremely unnecessary, just because she allegedly worked in a vet clinic before assisting in declawing and "all the cats who were declawed there seemed perfectly fine"
I just want to know if anyone has any experience regarding the bad long term effects of declawing for cats? Especially the aging ones? Or do you happen to have any links to sites that share those experiences?
Sorry, I know it's a sensitive issue, but I really want to enlighten that person and experiences from other cat owners might help. Thanks in advance!
Oh, and to make it legal, here are some pics of my cats:
